Wianki 2008

The traditional huge outdoor event relating to the celebrations of Midsummer Night, to primeval, mysterious and pagan rituals, which took place during the summer solstice. Every year, crowds of thousands of Cracovians and tourists, of which young people are the majority, gather on the Vistula Boulevards near Wawel to listen to concerts, watch outdoor shows, fireworks displays and have fun together. A competition for the most beautiful garland is always conducted on the day of the show. The show has become one of the biggest outdoor events in Poland.

The peak tourist season, the beginning of the holidays, warm June night – all of this is conducive to the mood of good fun on the Vistula boulevards. At Wianki, for the past few years, Krakow has been hosting stars not only from the Polish show business, but also stars of world music. The event arouses more and more interest from television stations. In 2005, programme 2 of TVP broadcasted a live broadcast from Krakow, and in 2007 we could watch a live relation of Wianki on POLSAT television. Last year’s Wianki could be watched on Onet.tv.

The 2008 Edition was exceptional. The audience gathered on Vistula Boulevards listened to the concert of the outstanding British band Jamiroquai, which was the main star of the evening. Polish performers also appeared: Smolik, Novika, Bisquit, Mosqitoo, Loco Star and June. It couldn’t go without a spectacular pyrotechnical show.
